In a world where we are all thinking more about our environment, and trying to go green, bamboo is an excellent choice for those concerned about the world that their children and grandchildren will grow up in.
Bamboo is an eco-friendly, rapid, renewable resource because it regenerates itself without replanting, and reaches maturity in only five to six years where it can grow to a height of about 80 feet. Although many characteristics of bamboo are similar to those of hardwoods, bamboo is not a wood. It is classified as a grass and is much denser, and therefore stronger than hardwoods.
Unlike Oak trees, which can take up to 90 years to reach full maturity, bamboo takes much less time to grow and is environmentally friendly. There are thousands of bamboo species which grow almost everywhere in the world.
By nature, bamboo is hard and durable. It is a very stable material, because it absorbs less moisture and does not shrink or swell as much as most other hardwood materials.
Only recently, bamboo had been accepted and used in the U.S. flooring industry. In Europe and Asia, bamboo has been around for thousands of years. From chopsticks to scaffolding, bamboo has been a reliable resource in many different industries.
